u-kra-'ji-na

A photographic presentation and reading of material from: "U-kra-'ji-na: A Dictionary for a Diaspora" by Dmytri Hryciw.

The Ukrainian diaspora in America holds its history, culture, and ideals as treasures never to be lost and insistently passed down to future generations. Although the passion with which this knowledge and love is unquestionably maintained, over the past half-century the separation between this diaspora’s ideal notion of it’s origin and the realities of contemporary Ukraine has grown. This project intends to fill that gap by presenting twenty-four “definitions” that reflect the opinions and impressions left on a Ukrainian-American during his time in Ukraine. Each of these twenty-four definitions is composed of a photograph, a Ukrainian word, and a short written entry that are meant to work in unison, defining and explaining one another in an attempt to create or represent individual ideas, people, or places. Together these “definitions” coalesce into a conceptual dictionary, a dictionary about Ukraine, for Ukrainians: a dictionary for a diaspora.
